Day 137 of 365

Taming the Tongue

James 3:5-6

James 3:5-6

“Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body.”

Insight

The tongue is small but powerful. It can encourage or destroy, heal or wound, build up or tear down. James says it's like a spark that can set a forest on fire. Gossip destroys reputations. Lies break trust. Harsh words wound souls. But the tongue can also bless, encourage, and speak life. You can't completely tame the tongue, but through the Holy Spirit's help, you can control it. Before you speak, pause. Is it true? Is it kind? Is it necessary?

Reflection

What words have you spoken recently that you regret? What damage did they cause? How can you use your tongue to build up instead of tear down this week?
