Day 204 of 365

The Discipline of Fasting

Matthew 6:17-18

Matthew 6:17-18

“But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”

Insight

Fasting is a spiritual discipline where you abstain from food to focus on God. It's not about earning God's favor—it's about increasing your dependence and awareness of Him. Jesus says 'when you fast,' not 'if you fast,' assuming it's a regular practice. But it should be private, between you and God. Don't broadcast your fasting for applause. Fast in secret. God sees and rewards. Use hunger to fuel prayer. Replace meals with Scripture. Fast for breakthrough.

Reflection

When's the last time you fasted? What breakthrough are you believing God for that would motivate you to fast?
